Before I begin with my review of God Is A Gamer, I would like to confess something here. I am a very impatient man when it comes to books that I look forward to read once they’re announced and there are a couple of authors who make the cut for me when it comes to their books with my impatience and Ravi Subramanian is an integral part of this list. I have a track record of finishing all his books within a span of 6-7 hours, mostly through the night. His books make me sit straight and keep me awake till I turn the very last page and God Is A Gamer is no exception to this regime.
I read God Is A Gamer in August before its final draft was locked and it is only me who knows how I have kept myself silent all this time from raving about it. As we all know that God Is A Gamer is the first book which is about the virtual currency which has taken the world by storm and is touted to be the future, the Bitcoin and how Ravi has used them in his plot is something I am sure a reader will applaud.
The book begins with an intense discussion between two corporate honchos, Vijay Banga, President of Mastercard International and Joseph Saunders, the CEO of Visa International. After a year, Wikileaks shakes the core of the US Government and bitcoins come in to the picture and soon after there’s an explosion killing a bureaucrat pushing FBI into a vortex of mad chase. In India, things are taking their own course, a prominent banker dies after slipping from the rooftop of a building in the middle of a party. A small gaming company, owned by Aditya Rao (Does the name ring a bell?) gets on the world map after Varun, a genius, joins them and turns its fortunes around. Simultaneously, there is a dark world, growing by the day and run by the dark currency, called the Bitcoins is turning people’s life upside down.
This and a lot more, God Is A Gamer is a roller coaster ride with many surprises and shocks in equal amounts. The plot is tight and pushes a reader to skip a couple of pages to know what’s going to happen next and who is pulling the strings. There is love, lust, lies and secrets in various shades adding new dimensions to the story. For those who are looking for a banking potboiler, well, let me just tell you know that this book is not high on it though banking does play an important part in the plot. However, if you love games, you will know where Ravi is coming from and what he is trying to do but trust me, you will be in for a surprise.
As always, author’s research regarding the world of bitcoins is extensive and if you’ve been reading Ravi’s recent interviews about God Is A Gamer, you’d know that he has left no stone unturned with his research and it shows in the book. God Is A Gamer is a perfect friday night read and trust me, this time you won’t need Coffee or Red Bull to accompany you while reading this one, the book is packed with an adrenaline rush which will not let you sleep till you finish reading it.
