Book Review – 2012 Nights – Vipul Rikhi

21st December 2012, supposedly a doomsday predicted by Mayans thousands of years ago. Vipul Rikhi’s book 2012 Nights revolves around that date. The book had me at various levels and I must mention how punchy the narrative of the book is. I started reading it last night and finished it in a single seating! 😀

In 2012 Nights, a dead drunk writer, who, since he has seen a show on discovery channel about world ending on 21st December 2012 , some five years back is convinced that world is going to end soon tells stories to his cat Schahriar. His wife has left him, his friends loathe him for his habits and laid back attitude towards everything. He just gets psychotic day by day for the world. On 1st December 2012 he realises not much time is left for the world to end and then begins his stories. From Aladin to Sindbad to Alibaba, he twists and turns all the tales under the light of history, mythology, politics, allegorical and modern world and then the book moves to future and I would not talk about it further.

Vipul Rikhi’s writing style looked boring in the beginning but then when the stories were revealed, I was totally hooked to the book. I just kept turning pages. The book is an absolute page turner. All those memories of watching Alif Laila with the family where I got to know about Aladin, Sinbad and Ali Baba passed were refreshed and with the way Vipul has twisted these stories, hats off to him. 2012 Nights is refreshing and magical in its own way. Give it a read.
