I decided to read this book after attending Tisca Chopra’s talk session at the World Book Fair – 2014. Tisca who has proved her mettle with her acting and unconventional roles that she has played in various movies and TV serials has now penned down a book, Acting Smart. In some 200 odd pages, she has summed up her experiences and struggle that she had to do when she ventured into the big bad world of TV and Film industry to become an actor. Tisca started off as a model for various popular TV advertisements and face for various brands till she landed up with the role of the mother in Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par. That role got her immense popularity and she won many accolades post it but she never left her ground and continued working hard.
Acting Smart is divided into 14 chapters that will take you to Tisca’s journey in the show business. She has penned her experiences and learnings in this book and it can be picked up by any newbie or aspiring actor to learn and understand the nuances and prerequisites of being an actor. Trust me, it is not easy to crack the code in this industry and this book confirmed my beliefs.
The book focuses on right from starting out to find yourself an accommodation in Mumbai to getting your portfolio, showreel and CV made. What to do and what not to do while auditioning, how to carry yourself, image and publicity and control your behaviour and how to be always professional and dedicated towards your work. Tisca also shares her experiences with the casting couch scenario in the industry. It is an unabashed and uninhibited account of everything that she has experienced so far. Thinking out of the box is something that an actor should always be prepared for and never take your family, friends and feedback for granted is what the author stresses on.
The writing style is simple and there are instances in this book that will leave you grinning from ear to ear. A simple read with loads of insights and gyaan and some jugaad that will surely help an aspiring actor. Give it a shot.
