Every time I read a Devdutt Pattanaik book and I feel like, Oh My God, how does this man do this every single time? All the books by him that I have read till now have had the similar impact on me. His books grip you from the word go and you just cannot stop wondering how much this man knows about mythology and from where does he get the intellect to interconnect so many things and that too so convincingly? I started reading 7 Secrets of Goddess during Diwali days and mostly while I was commuting to work in Metro. Everyone around me looked at me as some religious guy reading some holy book, all thanks to the beautiful cover of the book. A couple of people came to me and asked is this some religious text that I am reading and I had to explain to them what the book was all about.
7 Secrets of Goddess tries to demystify the stories, rituals, symbols and secrets about the Goddesses that we worship across the length and the breadth of the country. In 7 chapters, the author has talked about secrets of Goddess Gaia, Kali, Gauri, Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati and Vitthai with numerous images and illustrations adding multiple dimensions to the book. The images in the book would entice you to no level and there would be times where you would be gaping at them trying to understand what do they symbolise. Every other page of the book is filled with beautiful and intriguing images of Goddesses and the text alongside would try to connect various dots and the author is trying to draw inferences out of them. In every chapter, there are small stories and anecdotes about the Goddess that the particular chapter features.
As the book progresses, Pattanaik takes you into the numerous known and unknown mythological worlds and various fables and stories of those times and draw a picture in front of your eyes and his theories would leave you wondering and spark myriad of thoughts in your mind. Each Devdutt Pattanaik book does that to you and this is what makes him stand out in the crowd. I urge to you pick any of his books and give it a shot and I am sure you would instantly turn into his fan. The effect could be so much that you would want to procure the rest of the books written by him and would like to sail through all of them.
One thing that I would definitely like to suggest to all the people who want to read any book by Devdutt Pattanaik and that would be, to have an open mind and understand that he means no harm. There could be times where you might feel outraged about the kind of things or inferences the author is trying to draw but in the end one must realize that it is just a person’s perspective towards things and people have all the right to disagree with him.
